Redevelopment Plans Submitted for Landmark Jewellery Quarter Site
Plans have been submitted for a major new development in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter that would see a prominent 1.5-acre site transformed into a vibrant residential and commercial destination.
Led by Hanehouse Developments, the proposals for the site—framed by Hockley Hill, Well Street, Barr Street and Great King Street—aim to bring new life to this gateway location through a scheme known as Hockley Gate.
The project would deliver 281 high-quality new homes alongside flexible commercial space and landscaped internal gardens, helping to meet growing demand for urban living in one of Birmingham’s most characterful quarters.
At the heart of the scheme is the restoration of a striking Grade II-listed former bank building, located on the corner of Hockley Hill and Well Street. The historic building will be carefully brought back into use and thoughtfully integrated into the wider development.
While the listed building will be retained and revitalised, the remainder of the site’s existing structures will be cleared to make way for a mix of modern one, two, and three-bedroom apartments arranged across buildings rising from four to six storeys.
Richard Whitehouse, director at Hanehouse Developments, said "We are thrilled to bring forward plans for this exciting residential-led regeneration scheme. The opportunity to assemble a single site of this scale in such a prominent location was too significant to overlook. After four years of engagement with landowners and the local authority, we are delighted to submit a proposal that delivers high-quality homes and an amazing internal landscape, while restoring the traditional street frontage. The inclusion of commercial units will help support local businesses and contribute to the area's economic growth."
