Plans to transform a prominent site in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter have been given the green light, paving the way for a major residential-led development designed by BPN Architects that will deliver new homes alongside the restoration of a historic listed building.
Developer Hanehouse has secured approval for the Hockley Gate scheme, a 1.5-acre island site set to provide 269 apartments. The project will also incorporate 4,671 sq ft of commercial floorspace and a further 5,834 sq ft dedicated to resident amenities.
The plans also include five ground-floor commercial units facing onto Hockley Hill and Well Street. These spaces are intended to support the Jewellery Quarter’s creative and jewellery-making industries, aligning with the ambitions set out in the area’s Neighbourhood Plan and offering opportunities for both established and emerging businesses.
Richard Whitehouse, director at Hanehouse Developments, said: "We are very proud to have secured planning approval for Hockley Gate. This concludes the first part of our journey to deliver much needed homes in this part of Birmingham. We were pleased to engage with local residents and businesses during the planning process and would like to thank them for their support and input. We believe the scheme will provide a catalyst for further regeneration in the area. Our focus is now on moving into the delivery phase and working with the existing occupiers, including APS, as we prepare to bring the development forward."
